11 hours will fly by when you're doing something you love. Once again, it was an honor to be on such a warm, wonderful, talented team of artists from The Hair Room Service NYC. I'm truly inspired and stretched every time I work with Owner & Lead Stylist, Michael Duenas and Lead Stylist, Kerrie Urban (pictured below), I always leave stronger. The Proverb, "Iron Sharpens Iron" is so relevant within the Industry as well as in your personal life. You should surround yourself with people you learn from and from whom you're empowered by. Likewise, you should do the same to others.

So take a peek at the behind the scenes images of The Hair Room Service and our hair care sponsors Schwarzkopf & Salon Tech Tools at the NYC Fame Shows... and I hope you'll be inspired too!

I particularly fell in love with Schwarzkopf's OSIS, 'Dust It' mattifying powder. It's fantastic to have in your hair kit for those times you need texture, volume and oil absorbing powder pronto. Also Salon Tech's Ceramic Flat Iron works like a Charm!!

I was a model for my fellow stylist who created this beautiful collection of braids, which includes a french braid and a fishtail. So cool!

Did you go to school for Makeup?

I didn't attend school for my profession. Working, attending workshops, reading books and studying magazines became my school. I learned my craft as I went and I was always making sure I was around people who inspired me and people I could learn from. I went to FIDM, Fashion College where I studied Visual Communications. I learned the theories of color and design, which helped me as an artist. I also learned how to market a creative business, plan events, wardrobe style and various other skills that helped me along my way as a freelance makeup artist and business owner. I put myself through college while working as a Hair & Makeup Artist. I continue to soak up all the knowledge I can, I continue to push my self, my creativity and my courage. I recommend if you're a Makeup Artist to make sure you're attending Trade shows! Here are a few NOT to miss...

IMATS. www.imats.net International Makeup Artist Trade Show. I was totally inspired by my time at the trade show in Pasadena and ran into some ol' favorites including Dany Sanz of Makeup Forever, Sharon Gault aka Mama Makeup, and met some new inspirational artists including the incredible, Rae Morris and the Creator of IMATS and The Makeup Artist Magazine himself, Michael Key.

The Makeup Show: www.TheMakeupShow.com which starts TODAY (May 15 &16th) in NYC! I so wish I can be there for this spectacular display of talent!! Some of the gurus I'd love to see if I were in the Big Apple this weekend would be... I had the honor of being asked to be interviewed for a Senior Project. I love to share my story and passion with young artists! Here are a few of my answers (1 of 11 questions), thought I'd also share it with you!

1. What made me become a makeup artist: a Dream and an opportunity, with a lot of dedication, passion and courage! I grew up dancing, so makeup application was a natural part of every performance or concert. As young as I can remember I loved playing dress up and doing makeup. I practiced on my sisters and friends, and at 16 I went and applied for a job at Glamour Shots. It was working there for 2 years that I was able to get my hands on faces of all ages, all ethnicities, all colors. I gained a tremendous amount of experience and love for my craft during those 2 years! At age 18, I met and started working with a celebrity Photographer, who I ended up working with for the next 10 years! I became a makeup artist, because I followed my dream and just NEVER STOPPED doing it, I NEVER GAVE UP!!

So here is a quick teaser from a Beauty shoot I did last night with photographer: Jojo Serina. We didn't even begin this shot until after 1 am, when we were done with our photo shoot for CLOTH Hawaii.

I grabbed my Makeup Forever Pigment Palette and painted on red cream color all over my eyelids (more pics to come soon, I promise!) and with the same color, all over my lips. I finished with a cherry color lip gloss and voila! Here is what we did in the wee hours of the morning.

I heart NY, let me count the ways...

Ahh, New York. I'm so looking forward to seeing you again. To feel the wind take my hair as I zip through the city in a crazy cab, to sense the sun on my shoulders as I stroll through Central Park, to hear the sound of stilettos make their way across cobble stone roads of the Meat Packing district, and of course to ooh and ahh over the latest and greatest fashion, beauty and architecture that can only be captured in the Big Apple.

I can't wait to work and schlep around my hair and makeup kit to fabulous sets and studios. To meet glamourous and driven artists, to paint the prettiest faces and to enjoy the chicest shows and runways. I've been so incredibly inspired attending the past two September Fashion Weeks in NY, I absolutely crave being backstage, interviewing models and celebs on inner beauty, and I heart being on the hair and makeup teams of the most talented artists in the world.

Why wouldn't I want to go back to New York? This time, for a bit longer, perhaps? As I plan my fall return to the City that never sleeps, I came across this gem on Vogue Diaries and thought it would be appropriate to share it with all of you.

Until I return, I at least have Vogue.com to melt my heart.

Inspired! Day 3 & 4

(1/3/11) 3. Admiring the Work of Others: I caught this moment while I was backstage at the Zac Posen show in NY during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. The look was created by Global Makeup Artist, Charlotte Willer for Maybelline Cosmetics. I had an opportunity to interview her after the show. One of my favorite things she said regarding the idea of beauty was, "it's imperfection that people love." She also said she had a blast creating this look for Zac! I had a blast taking pictures of her work. (check out her nails too)

(1/4/11) 4. Makeup as Art. Coloring outside the lines makes me smile. I delight in creating makeup that you wouldn't necessarily wear on a day to day basis, but something you would photograph and hang up in your room. I'm inspired by the Arts and Craft Store, examining the colorful items that catch my eye and envisioning how I can use it as makeup or in the hair. Here's a look I produced, along with the help of my sister Maria Blaich who keyed the hair.

Happy New Year Beauties!

1/1/11... it just sooounds so new and fresh. I love being able to swipe the slate clean, don't you? And when better to do so, literally and figuratively, than Jan 1st. And this year is special. It's the genesis of a decade. It's an invitation to imagine a clean palette. It's an invitation to create.

For Artists, creativity is everything. This year... embrace the artist within your own heart.

11 things in 11 days that inspire me as an artist (in random order):

(1/1/11) 1. My Makeup Kit. I get inspired all over again when I clean out my kit and especially when I add to it. I recommend every makeup artist or enthusiast to attend the IMATS (Int'l Makeup Artist Trade Show) It is the makeup artist's equivalent to Disneyland for a child! Here is an image from my makeup kit and my assistant's kit at a shoot in Kitchen Studios in New York. This was a colorful shoot for 3 models, so my kit was a bit more grandiose than usual.

(1/2/11) 2. Bare Naked Faces. We're all so unique and so intricately detailed in our design. Each face is unlike the other. I love looking at women's faces, either made up or not. There's a beauty about a bare face that intrigues me... and it's very inspiring. It's so vital as a woman to renew our minds on a daily basis and be confident in the fact that you are unique. You don't look like any other person, so stop trying. Do not compare yourselves to others. Period. I love that our Creator was so brilliant, he never duplicated a design! Be original. Be proud of being who you are... no one else can do it quite like you.

So class... today we'll be using our palettes that usually sit closer to the bottom of our makeup kits. Today we get to play, blend, and explore the endless possibilities of color, color, color! Here's a peak at the makeup madness, otherwise known as our work space. My Makeup & Hair Assistant was Jen Paelmo, who was a perfect fit to my cheerful & vibrant set. Photographer, Zack DeZon captured the beauty of the makeup on our three picture perfect models- all of whom are from Major Model Management- Christina, Kelly & Amanda. To document it all- from the getting ready & all the makeup changes to the girls working the camera and the occasional dance break in between shots- was videographer, Kathleen Hennessey. So pull out your pen and paper, get ready to take notes and enjoy the images below.

Organization is key. I love my quad roll up makeup case. (Purchased at Ricky's in NYC.)

Palettes are a makeup artists BFF, so many options right at your fingertips! (And it lightens your kit).

Makeup Forever's Color Pigment Palette was used for nearly every look at today's shoot. It's a must have.

Meet the exquisite Christina Vorobets from Major, NY, who rocked this dual colored orange lip with 1920's brows over her naturally groomed eyebrow. I used the Makeup Forever palette on her brows, eyelids & lips.

Miss Kelly Gervais in blue. Yes, even in sky blue lips she looks gorgeous. My inspiration for the blue used on Kelly, comes from my new & wonderfully talented NYC makeup artist friend, Stephanie West.

Major beauty! Our 3 lovely dolls looking like mannequins. Just wait till you see the final product in DISfunkshion Magazine in an upcoming issue.

Dolce & Gabbana team up with Naomi Campbell's Charity to produce a celebrity studded event for Fashion's Night Out in NYC- and I was there to help get the models glamourous.

A deep, cherry-red vampy lip paired with strong, organic brows and clean doll-like skin completed the look. My lovely friend, NYC Celebrity Makeup Artist, Sokphalla Ban keyed the look... and I happily worked along side her.

Here's a peak at the models I worked on, the party I attended and all the glitz and glam that led to the grand finale... Naomi and her 'girls' dancing in the streets of Manhattan.

I was there to witness this epic moment for my fellow Hawaiian and was so proud, as he was one of the stand out collections within the Project Runway Shows- and I'm not just being bias, others agreed!

Monica Belucci, Sophie Marceau and Eva Herzigova are my heroines! Finally, women brave enough to grace the cover of an International Magazine such as French Elle... without a stitch of makeup on. (And an Editor-in-Chief whose finally daring enough to let them) Of course they still have the best photographers with all the right illuminating touches, but these women are baring their true beauty and look so comfortable doing so. No lip gloss, no mascara, no bronzer to create supermodel cheekbones or gorgeously smudged eyeliner to brighten their eyes- just a twinkle in their gaze and healthy, well taken care of skin. How refreshing it is to see authentic beauty and not just a computerized version of a celebrity. Thank you French Elle for showing us refreshingly natural yet feminine women, sometimes I feel the Fashion Industry has forgotten what that looks like.

May these Covers serve as a pep talk to all women... never hide behind your makeup- you were born beautiful and makeup should only enhance your natural loveliness. And that my dear, is the naked truth.

I was so inspired by these women, I set out to create my own 'Stars sans Fards' moment...

(sans fards is a French idiom that literally means “without rouge/makeup,” but implies “openness.”)

Making a Splash!

Surfer, Model, Actress: Check. World Traveler, Philanthropist, Entrepreneur: Check. Sweet-Spirited, Warm-Hearted, Full of Compassionate: check.

This swimsuit siren is more than meets the eye, Hanna Cornett is a gem of a person. I first met this beach beauty at The Tag the World Charity Event she co-produced at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, where we snapped a couple of red hot, red carpet pictures together. As Facebook would have it, we became friends. :-) Months later, we found ourselves soaking up the Hawaiian Sun, as we darted across the island filming for a series called, Honolulu Social Diaries... beach days, birthday parties, sailing around Waikiki in private yachts... you name it, we filmed it. And all the while, Hanna was as sweet as Haupia Pie. Fast forward to May 4th, 2010 we find ourselves back at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel (one of my most fave hotels) but this time, I'd be working with Hanna, as her Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist. It's no work at all really, when you get to 'work' with a friend!

We were surrounded by lovely people. HI Luxury Magazine's Associate Publisher Linda Woo and Creative Director, Gina Lambert greeted us as we arrived to the famous pink hotel, while the talented and gorgeously pregnant, Yu Shing Tin arrived with bags of colorful bikinis. We were done with the shoot hours earlier than expected with plenty of time for laughs in between. I've said it before and I'll say it again... when you find a job you really love, you'll never work a day in your life. And I know, even as hard working as Miss Cornett is, she would whole heartedly agree. I'm inspired by this Swim Suit Siren, not only to get my okole in the gym, but more importantly to make sure while I'm on this beautiful journey called life, enjoying a career that I have found such fulfillment in, I take every opportunity to bless others and to cultivate beauty in the lives of the people around me.

I can't post pictures yet of our winner, Kehau... but I will tell you, this experience was one of the most rewarding makeovers I've ever done. When I handed Kehau the mirror so she could take her first look at her new makeover, there was a moment of silence before she burst into tears of joy... that had the whole Glam Team getting teary-eyed as well. It's moments like these that really strengthen my love for what I do and the people I'm blessed to work with.

My inbox has seen its fair share of emails from inquiring minds wanting to know the ‘secret to my success’. While this is a loaded question and my reply could easily take on the look of a novella - let me make it simple: Here are my 7 recommendations to breaking into the beautiful world of beauty.

1. Be a Beauty Bookworm: Read and collect as much knowledge as you can from books, magazines and online resources. I have 3 ring binders overflowing with inspirational tear sheets (pages from a magazine) of makeup I love, tips and tricks Iuse and products I can’t wait to get my hands on.

2. Practice makes Perfect Makeup: Put your knowledge to the test! Get your brushes on all the pretty faces you can. I would practice on my sisters and friends all the time to increase my confidence and skill. (I still do!) This is possibly the most empowering step. Honestly, you can't practice enough! Never stop learning, never stop playing, never think you know it all, never stop desiring to grow as an artist and as a person!

3. The Bold and the Beautiful: This is a career in which you have to display confidence if you wish to have your clients put their confidence in you. Believe in yourself and in your work! Steps 1 & 2 will get you to step 3! Words of life & inspirational images taped to your mirror at home will help you along this journey. If God has called you to this, he will equip you for this! “One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.”

4. Gift with Purchase: Immerse yourself in the Beauty Industry. Get a job as a makeup artist or around makeup artists! Learn from doing and also watching. Put yourself in an environment where you can see and do makeup. Sephora and Cosmetic Counters are a great way to begin. You also have the opportunity to own your own cosmetic business; Artisty is a trusted brand that will allow you to start making retail profit right away. In fact, I have a team of makeup artists who are reaping the benefits of working from home and painting faces at the same time! Internships are educational and can be exciting - seeing first hand from seasoned professionals. I have an intern and makeup assistants whom I love having around- not only do they lighten my load, I get to help them jump start their careers too. I started my makeup career at Glamour Shots (a photo studio), then went to a makeup counter (Prescriptives & MAC), all along I was working with photographers and collecting images for my book! Which leads me to my next tip...

5. Testing- 1,2,3... : It is vitally important to work with photographers... and gooooood ones at that! My first fashion photographer I worked with, was celebrity photographer, Dominic Petruzzi (DominicPetruzzi.com) He taught me a wealth of knowledge and continually pushed me to up my game. I’m so thankful for him. That was over 10 years ago, and counting. You’ll be working on TEST shoots to initially build your portfolio. Testing is done when you need pictures to build your portfolio- there is no client- just you, the model and the photographer (possibly Hair and Wardrobe stylists too) Expect to do work for free, especially when first starting out, later you can charge for tests- ‘paid tests’. I started working with modeling agencies, doing hair and makeup for the new models. This helped me create my portfolio, which acts as a visual resume. It gets you work, so work to get it right!

6. Tools of the Trade: Build your kit - you can't do makeup without it! If you can purchase at least one product per week, your kit will grow. Do expect to put some money into it, this is your start up cost for running your own business. Make sure to keep track of everything you do and spend for your resume and taxes. Working in the industry will provide you with discounts. MAC offers a discount too. You'll need a business card and one other proof of work to get a 40% card for MAC. Becoming a rep for Artistry allows you to recieve up to 40% off as well. Email me for more info. Most major cosmetic companies offer an industry discount, you just have to go through corporate and they require tear sheets, credits and agency representation.

7. “Hello World!”: Now that you have the tools, technique and confidence.... let the world know you’re ready to start as a Makeup Artist. Make simple business cards and print them cost effectively online (overnightprints.com or vistaprint.com). Create a ModelMayhem.com page, a Facebook page and twitter. Use the social networks in your favor. Spread the word to family and friends and create a referral incentive (“refer 2 clients to me, recieve a free makeover” for example) Make sure you only upload and use clean, beautiful images to showcase your work. Always have great makeup, hair, styling, l ighting in your pictures, and always use a model or someone equally as photogenic. You have one shot at making a first impression. And finally, make sure you as an artist, have time to pamper yourself and put a little effort into getting ready before a meeting or shoot. Don't leave home without lip gloss and a welcoming smile.... after all, it is your job to put your best face forward.

Happy Twenty 10

How bout that? Another decade! I'm excited about a bright shining, joy & beauty filled year to come! I celebrated NYE in Orange County with wonderful friends & family, danced the night away & made some New Year's Resolutions of course. I break my goals up into categories; I wanted to share with you my beauty resolutions! In random order....

1. Take time for the little things and pay attention to details, like painting your toenails in a color that makes you smile; like vibrant red or dazzling coral :-)

2. Have good hair days more often! My sister Maria at City Salon, HB does such an amazine job on my color, I vow to do it justice more often. With an occasional blow dry and hydrating treatments for my ends. Also to try NEW things with my hair. I usually do one of two things; up or down. I've fallen in love with Hair accessories and clips and bows and braids.... time to start sportin em!

3. To do something daily to get my heart rate up and to break a.... well, to glow. I love taking the stairs (unless I'm schlepping my kit with me) I love working out on the ball and I hope to take at least 10 mins a day to maintain my health.... and my body confidence!

4. To play with makeup colors that I usually don't use on myself. I am like everyone else; I have my 4 go to eye shadow colors.... but this NYE I did a smokey black, shimmering dark gray and silver look for the countdown, and I loved it. It was different for me and just plain Fun! I have no excuse, I have over 100 eyeshadow colors to play with, and by golly, I'm gonna use em!

5. Where ever I am, what ever I'm doing, when thoughts of fear, intimidation, or self-esteem issues jump in my mind, I promise to take a time out to look up at the sky and realize where my help comes from, I promise to speak life and love to myself and to the people I love... I promise to take time to cultivate beauty from the inside out... and to let my light shine! And of course, to blog all about it!

I got to 'talk story' with her about Canada (her home!), my visit to Vancouver last year, and of course the backstage model mayhem! It was nice to meet her after I've been admiring her work for some time now. Here are some quick snapshots of behind the scenes with Coco.

Doll Eyes

Here is the makeup look I created for the Acid Dolls Runway Show.

And this... is how you achieve it.

1. Natural-Colored Cream Eyeshadow as a base. (Water-proof Eye Paint by MAC in Untitled) all over eyelid from lashline to brow. From inner corner of the eye (almost touching the bridge of nose) to to the outer most part of the eye, extending towards the temple. You can cover the cream with a matching powder eyeshadow to set, I used Brule by MAC, a matte ivory color.

2. White Eyeliner around rim of the eye, upper and lower lashline. (I used Fascinating Kohl Pencil from MAC) Bring liner to the bridge of the nose to form a point, and exaggerate an extended line out to the temple. Make lines thin and clean. At the end of the makeover, I applied Shu Uemura Cream Pearl Pigment over the top of the white eyeliner to really make it shiny and pop! You can use a powder pigment as well... just make it really intense!

3.Work Metallic Brown Cream Eyeshadow around the white. I like to think of it as “hugging” the white eyeliner. I used my favorite go-to color, Rich Ground Fluidline by M.A.C. If you don’t have this in your kit... I highly recommend you make that happen! It’s brilliant and only $15 retail. Basically where the white ends, Rich Ground begins. Then continue to apply Rich Ground Fludiline all over the lid and blending it into the crease. Because it’s a cream, you get a clean line (when working around the white) and you get a great color payoff in general. Rich Ground also extends out to the temple.

4. Blend an orange-tinted brown powder eyeshadow into the crease over Rich Ground and blend up and out. Please use warm colors; browns with an orange undertone. I used a lot of Soft Brown Matte by MAC, (one of my all time fave colors!) the colors Saddle, Espresso and a hint of Orange to brighten it all up. (all by MAC) Blend the same eyeshadow combination into the bottom lashline, from the white eyeliner on down.

5. Next apply Waterproof Black cream eyeliner. I used Fluidline by MAC with an angle brush on the upper lashline in the lashes, and on the lower lashline, in between the white pencil and Rich Ground fluid line. I save the black for last so it won’t smear. This will give you a guidline for the lashes that are to follow.

6. Then apply the top lashes first with black glue. Next apply the bottom lashes underneath the white eyeliner. The bottom lashes will NOT be touching the real lashes.

7. Over Extended Eyebrows. I use an eyebrow pencil first, usualy in taupe, then I go over the pencil with an angled brush and an appropriate eyeshadow. This will look different for every eye and brow shape. Use your judgement with these pictures as a guide line. You can do the brows earlier on in the makeover to help give you a guidline.

Think the art of makeup is lavishly delicious? Try being backstage at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Bryant Park in New York.... it was like being at Baskin Robbins and being able to try all 31 flavors! There was so much to look at, so many people to chat with and so many gorgeous garments and products that caught my eye. As a Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist myself, this was my favorite part of attending Fashion Week. I was lucky enough to see so many fantastic shows such as Arise, Jill Stuart, Christian Siriano, Argentine, Venexiana and Tommy Hilfiger to name a few... but the very first show I went to was Rosa Cha, which perfectly melded my two worlds together; a tropical rush of swimwear with the chic city ambience and style. I didn't waste anytime after the show, and made a beeline for backstage... there I met the talented and oh so sweet, Fred Vellon, National Makeup Artist for M.A.C Cosmetics who gave me the low down on the inspiration for the look, the products and the love of makeup! I also met one of the

'it' girls of the supermodel world, Chanel Iman whose sugary personality made her as charming as she is gorgeous! Enjoy the eye candy below!!

I had the pleasure of working with Daniel Dae Kim, (for the third time) as well as the lovely Yun Jin Kim on a photo shoot for Entertainment Weekly. It's so nice to work with Daniel again, from the first time I worked with him for a television commercial to this shoot in Kahala... he's been ever so sweet! This day, his beautiful wife and cute lil boy showed up to the shoot to watch Daddy... I love seeing that!! We had a blast on the beach of Kahala and I got to work with some of my friends on the shoot as well. Out of all the beautiful, incredible pictures we shot that day, this was the only one to make it into the magazine. As a Hair and Makeup Artist you always hope that they'll pick the close up shot, but alas, this was the lucky image that made its debut in Entertainment Weekly.

We were all over the island of Oahu, from the beaches of the east side, to the shrimp trucks of the North Shore, from the red dirt farmland of Kunia to the mountain tops of the Pali! This island has so much to offer... and we took full advantage of every opportunity! I just love my work, even if it's 12 hours of working, I can't get enough of it! We shot these images in back of Diamond Head, and prayed for sunshine! Although we had to sit through some rain, we ended up with the picture perfect light that I was praying for! Isn't that life, we get all frustrated when we have to 'wait through the rain', but God always blesses those who love him and are obedient to his word. He often blesses us in spite of us... and after the rain, comes just what we needed... a little bit of warm, golden sunshine from Heaven! I just love this sunburst in the picture above.

Legendary Makeup Artist, Kevyn Aucoin once said, “There are no rules in makeup.” We couldn’t agree more! In the past we’ve been told to pick just one color to use to play up the eyes; this time around, the skies the limit. Express

yourself with all the colors of the wind... all at once!

Loud Mouth:

Don’t forget about your pout. Lips play a supporting role in this work of art, but that doesn’t mean they go unnoticed. Cotton candy and cherry stained lips should be served sheer and shiny this spring.

For this editorial take on the trend, start with a neutral cream shadow to help intensify the vibrant color you’ll be painting with. “I love to think of makeup as an art form,” says Makeup Artist Jessica Hoffman, “and not just the paint-by-numbers sort of makeup we do day in and day out. I love to push myself to create looks that are outside the box. Color doesn’t have to stay within the perimeters of the lash line and brow bone. Take it to the extreme. Use different application techniques as well. For instance, I took a tapered crease brush and picked up bright orange loose powder eyeshadow and sprinkled the color over the eyes by tapping the brush off the back of my hand. Some pigment even landed in the eyelashes... I loved it!”

Work with warm and cool colors to create balance within this otherwise arbitrary application of color. Hoffman uses cool colors such as purples, blues and greens to extend to the temple and down on the tops of the cheekbone. She keeps the warm splashes of orange and gold near the lashline to draw the attention back to the eyes.

When you look good you feel good, and vice versa. So let the world see just how wonderfully

multi-faceted you are; you happy, vibrant, colorful you... Now that’s a bright idea!

About a year and a half ago, I got a call from a London Based Magazine called Cooler, they were going to be shooting in Hawaii and wanted to book me as the Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist. I was stoked! I ended up working with Sanoe Lake, Sonya Balmores and Alana Blanchard. All of whom are beautiful girls and I so enjoyed working with them all.

Alana Blanchard is the best friend of Bethany Hamilton, a modern day hero since she survived that infamous shark attack, and someone I really admire. Alana and I talked a bit about Bethany, and the attack... but we also talked about life and adventures, travel, boys, boards and of course makeup and surfing! (Not necessarily in that order!) I was inspired to post these pictures and write about the shoot after a chance meeting yesterday with some pretty incredible men of film making. They shared their story, and I shared mine. Enjoy the story below!

Today I had the incredible pleasure of catching the sunset at the Turtle Bay resort while having cocktails (well, okay... so I had a strawberry/banana smoothie!) with a wonderfully talented group of men; the Producers, Writers, and the Director of the new movie on the life story of Bethany Hamilton called Soul Surfer. I was enthralled by their stories, moreover, Bethany's story. I've had the great privilege of meeting Bethany and her family in the past, and was really touched by Bethany's faith and strength, but also her gentleness and love that just poured out of her. I remember talking to her mom about possibly doing makeup on the set of the movie that they would one day be making of her beautiful daughter's powerful story.... well that day has come, and Hawaii will be happy to hear that they begin filming Sept 15th. (The day before my mom's birthday... easy to remember!) I was excited about this major motion picture coming to Hawaii, but after this fateful, joyous encounter on the shores of Turtle Bay, I'm even more elated! I was in the company of dreamers, visionaries, achievers, story-tellers and I left so high on life and eager to create myself!! It was a glorious day on the North Shore... and this was only the beginning to the story of Soul Surfer comes to Hawaii. Many more to come...

This is the cover of Bethany Hamilton's Book, Soul Surfer, that will soon be a major motion picture. (Just to clarify, I didn't do the makeup and hair for this cover) Wait till you hear the ALL STAR cast!! I'm talking all-star. I can't wait to finally read this cover to cover, and as I linger in my Turtle Bay room overlooking the East Bay, with the sliding glass doors open to reveal a summery, sweet breeze, this seems to be the perfect time and place to do so. Let me please, entice you with an excerpt of Bethany's book. This is actually the opening paragraph.

" It came, literally, out of the blue. I had no warning at all; not even the slightest hint of danger on the horizon. The water was crystal clear and calm; it was more like swimming in a pool, rather than the deep ocean waters in Kauai, Hawaii, where I go almost every morning to surf with my friend Alana Blanchard or the other girls on the Hanalei girls' surf team. The waves were small and inconsistent, and I was just kind of rolling along with them, relaxing on my board with my right hand on the nose of the board and my left arm dangling in the cool water. I remember thinking, " I hope the surf picks up soon... ," when suddenly there was a flash of gray. That's all it took: a split second."

And she sums it all up pretty incredibly toward the end of her book:

"But for me, knowing that God loves me and that He has a plan for my life that no shark can take away is like having solid rock underneath me. (Matthew 7:24-27) Look, lots of bad stuff happens to people. That's life. And here's my advice: don't put all your hope and faith into something that could suddenly and easily disappear. And honestly, that's almost anything. The only thing that will never go away, that will never fail you, is your faith in God."

I'm so blessed by her story... and I'm excited to see her story come to life this September, here in Paradise!

Survival of the fittest!

I had the pleasure of working with Miss Sydney Wheeler (who just survived 8 episodes of Survivor!) in Newport Beach last week on a shoot for Protest, a Holland based surf wear company. We had an amazingly fun time working... if it can even be called that. When you work with fabulous, professional and fun-loving people... a 13 hour day, goes by in a blink of an eye. I never looked at my watch once! It was a four day shoot with the one and only, Michael Voorhees Photographer, and his talented tight-knit crew! All of whom I just love. Looking forward to many more exciting shoots with this team! Look for coming blogs all about the Protest shoot!! Here's a sneak peak at our colorful cast!!

Here is a beauty shot of Sydney! I just love how her hair turned out... and it's so simple to do! First I started with volumizing spray (Add Volume by KMS) at the roots, then spritzed each individual lock of hair with Sea Salt Spray (again by KMS) as I twisted each strand and wrapped it into a mini bun, securing each with a hair pin. I continued that process until I had about 5-7 twisted buns. Then we proceeded to do her makeup while letting the hair set. Once we did the makeup, it was time to shake out the hair. I ran my fingers through the tight coils to smooth it out. (I avoided using a comb as to not take out too much curl) We finished by having Sydney flip her hair upside down, as I sprayed and teased (this time using a large tooth comb) to add even more messy volume. Once she stood up right, it was time to add a lil shine serum/ anti-frizz spray to leave the waves with a glossy finish. And waaa laaa... Here is the finished product!

Makeup was kept quite fresh and pure! Just the way I like it :-) I used a lot of cream and gel products to keep it looking glossy, but not sweaty. Some of my all time favorite products are:

Tarte Cheek Stain (Sephora) and Neutrogena Shimmer Sheer (now discountinued! Ugh!) Both of which I apply with a foundation brush using a patting motion. When you 'rub' a product on to the skin, you just move product back and forth, patting motion is more intentional... you have to be in control of the makeup, and tell it where to go! More on this makeup in my next blog!

CYBER SWIM PHOTO SHOOT at Turtle Bay/ Day 1

There are those days when you thank God you do what you do, when you feel so blessed and over joyed to be in the career that you are in... and this was one of those days!

Day 1 of 6 for a print photo shoot for a bathing suit catalogue for Cyber Swim. I was booked to do Hair and Makeup for 8 girls throughout the week. The client, Lisa (who is incredibly sweet & professional all at the same time) put me up at the Turtle Bay Resort for the week, and I booked one of my best friends and extremely talented artist, Crystal Pancipanci as my second artist for the dream job. We also had Meileen Ramos assisting us throughout the day as well. With three artists to four girls, everything went by so smoothly and there was time to enjoy the talent and the day. Of course, having a wonderful, efficient, easy to work with photographer always sets the tone for a beautiful day. Thank you Michael Voorhees Photography!! Overall we were all pretty happy campers! Here is how Day 1 unfolded....

Me with Cameron Diaz... actually I got to work on the lovely Valentina Hubsch, a dead ringer for Miss Diaz, even down to the happy, bubbly, joyful attitude! Nothing like sitting on the sand, under the shade of a palm tree working away!

The talented and very lovely ladies of Cyber Swim! What a phenomenal group... we were friends from the get go!

The hilarious and beautiful Nathalie Geld! What a treat it is to work with her... she'll keep you laughing and mesmerized the whole day through.

Group shot! We happened to find Jane, a beautiful older woman, who was lounging in the sand, and she happened to be wearing a Cyber Swim Bathing Suit... so.... we put her in the shot! She was a fantastic sport. We were all inspired by her beauty and confidence! Talk about being in the right place at the right time!

This was our tent set up on the beach, so the models could change quickly between shots! And my sassy Makeup Artist Panci striking a pose.

Day 1: 13 hour work day. With a 3 hour lunch break in between.

Always so enjoyable getting to work with your friends in the industry. Here's Brigitte Patton as DISFunkshion Magazine's newest model.... and here's what she has to say!

Here's some sneak peeks behind the scenes... but I can't give too much away, you'll just have to buy the new issue when it comes out! You can pick DISfunkshion up NATION wide now at any Barnes and Nobles store!

The makeup and hair for this story was equal parts rock n' roll and girly-girl... just like our model. For each look I used sequins, jewels, glitter, stickers and applied them to the skin, eye and eyelash with Duo lash adhesive glue. Even the flower in the hair was embellished with rhinstones and glitter.

We rocked it out for this shoot... literally. Microphone included.

In the LIME Light

We know that beauty can't be judged objectively, for what one person finds beautiful may not appeal to another. Therefore all shapes, all colors, all forms may in fact be, beautiful. That's the thing about beauty.... you can find it anywhere, and in anyone. Now isn't that beautiful?

Here are some shots I think are just beautiful....

Rich, saturated, vivid hues, using bold shapes.... I love having the freedom to create the makeup that makes me melt! And with this artistic interpretation of beauty... it's sure to be in the lime light.

Inspiration for the Journey...

Crowning Glory

It was quite a privilege to work with Hawaii's newest Miss this past Sunday at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. From the opening number to the first walk as Miss Hawaii 09, Ariana Tseu stole the show! This woman is beautiful, poised, smart, passionate.... and I know she is going to do an amazing job representing Hawaii on the National Level!! I had the best time working back stage with her! Through four different hair/ makeup and outfit changes.... there was never a stressful moment. It was so enjoyable! Don't get me wrong, backstage at a pageant you'll always be rushing.... but never a bad attitude, a negative word, or a wrong look came from Ariana. She in fact, was often mentoring and coaching some of the other contestants who had never done this before, backstage. It was rewarding to see someone take the crown who really was deserving of it! This evening marked the 10 year anniversary for Ariana, of being crowned Miss Teen Hawaii! It was a monumental night now taking the crown for MISS HAWAII as well. And as her Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist..... I was very proud!! I even got to jump up on stage to touch her up.... after she made her walk down the catwalk of course.... it was a crowning moment for both of us you could say!

Model Citizen

It always brings me great joy to work with friends... in this case, a lifelong friend, a best friend. Renee Shaeffer and I met when we were 5 year old lil girls... and now I'm her makeup artist on her exciting journey as a model. This women is the best model there is: a role model. She has a heart that's pure and true, with a soft and generous spirit. Her passion for encouraging other women is compelling. Her bright smile can light up a room. Her exuberant laugh and zest for life is contagious. Her dedication to living a life of integrity and living a life to please the Lord is courageous... and in short.... beautiful. With so many young women out there attempting to make it as a model.... wouldn't it be nice, if every young women strived just as hard to make it as a role model? This should always be the type of model we envy, the type of model every lil girl hopes to become....

"To have a lovely face.... is lovely. But to first have the foundation of a lovely heart, is my definition of Gorgeous."

What happens when you put two Makeup Artist/Hair Stylists together?

a) We have way too much fun during the getting ready process, that we loose track of time.

b) We each do our own makeup... after all, we can do it with our eyes shut (if it came down to it.)

c) They become best friends; with having so much in common, and so much to talk about of course.

d) They document the process from curlers in the hair, to out the door.

e) All of the Above.

Editor-in-chief, Molly Chizzick; Fashion Director, Kenny Hazelwood; Director of Photography, Dominic Petruzzi; and Model, Danielle Donn all flew to Hawaii to meet me (Makeup and Hair Stylist) for an Exotic Shoot on the one and only Lanikai Beach! We had a blast in the blazing heat! But it's okay, we all got to go for a dip in the blue sea after we wrapped. I even wore my bikini to work! Gotta love that! All our hard work paid off... take a peek.

Water World

Facial Misters aren't just for cooling.... they can also help hydrate and heal the skin. Which is why they're one of my favorite treats during a makeup, and also why I tote my aqua spritz to the beach with me, or throw one into a ziplock when I fly (which is monthly!). As we all know, sea salt, although healing in many ways, can leave your skin feeling less than perfect; same with flying. Recently I was teaching a seminar in a very air conditioned room for 8 hours straight. Half way into it, I was feeling dry, hoarse and not so hot. Thankfully I had my secret weapon with me. I pulled out my Facial Mister and felt immediate relief, I continued spraying throughout the seminar (on breaks of course!) and made it through the day with a little help from my friend. Here are some of my favorites:

Not only does this nourish and refresh your skin, it also removes excess residue and restores skin to its natural pH. Apply before moisturizer, as this will help all products that are applied afterwards to penetrate more effectively.

We know the doctor's orders on how much water to drink each day.... don't you think your skin is thirsty too? Bottom line... for a perfect world, make it a water world.

Eye-Do's

They say the eyes are the window to the soul.... that's a whole lot of pressure for your peepers! So why not give your eyes the attention they deserve. After all, if it's through the eyes we get a glimpse of what makes you, you.... you should be batting away at those lashes, and telling the world that your beauty isn't just skin deep. Don't save it all for 'the big day', here are some

Eye-do's for every beautiful day of the year:

1) While you were Sleeping: They call it beauty sleep for a reason. While you're hitting the hay, Sleep researchers say, your body is healing and repairing itself. This is why dermatologist recommend using your strongest cream at night. We need our 8 hours each night to ensure "Sleeping Beauty" status. (I need to take a dose of my own medicine on this one!) In our hectic world we live in, with all the super-women flying around town.... it's no wonder so many women wear bags under their eyes instead of under their arms. Sweet Dreams are easy on the eyes!
Try: Skyn Icelands, Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gel Patches / Sephora $45.00

2) We all Scream for Eye Cream: Yes it's true, we ALL could benefit from eye cream. The skin under the eye is so thin and sensitive, and does not produce any oil, no wonder it's the first to show signs of aging. And no one wants that. One of my favorite tricks is to keep your eye cream in the fridge, not only do you get the benefits from the vitamins and other potent ingredients, you benefit from the chill factor as well. To relieve puffy eyes, try caffeine... not in your drink, but in your eye cream... puffiness is due to build up of water. In a nutshell, caffeine disperses the water under the skin, and leaves you puff free.
Try Prescriptives Vibrant-C Skin Brightening Eye Cream. $38 / Macy's Not only does it contain caffeine, it has a beautiful, light reflecting pigment that makes your skin glow. (When I worked at Prescriptives, nearly a decade ago.... their Vibrant line was cutting edge and one of the most popular eye creams on the market... apparently, it still is! )
For Dark Circles: Vitamin K is often recommended by dermatologists because of its lightening effect on the skin
Try: Jan Marini Factor-A Eyes for Dark Circles. $75.00 / select spas

3) Let the Sunshine In: Not in my oversized, overpriced Salvatore Ferragamos! While I do love the look of humungo sunglasses (you can take the girl out of Orange County.... but you can't take the Orange County out of the Girl!) I also wear them for my protection. I know, I know, it feels oh so good to have the warmth of the sun caress your skin... but you should always protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun.... especially on an area that's as sensitive as the eye area. So go ahead, rock your shades that would make the Olsens proud! Beauty and Brains... my favorite combination! Double up with a sunscreen in your eye cream (it will help ease the look of darkness under the eyes as well)
Try: Shiseido Sun Protection Eye Cream SPF 32 $30.00 / Macy's, Nordstroms

4) Heatwave: For eyes that won't suffer a makeup-meltdown in the heat of the night... or in the heat of the day , use a waterproof eye shadow cream base under your powder eyeshadow, or by itself. I never-ever put eyeshadow on without a proper base, especially since relocating to island life. And I'm sorry, but the ol' trick of putting concealer on your eyelids as a base, just won't cut it. Concealer is meant to be emollient, therefore, it will never dry to a matte finish, which is what you want to battle humidity.
Try: Bobbi Brown, Long wear Gel Eyeliner $21 ( you can use this as a shadow base on the lash line and eyelid. Use a synthetic brush to spread the color over desired area.) and Bobbi Brown, Long-wear Cream Shadow $22 / Nordstroms
MAC, Eye Paint and Fluidline $16.50, $15.00/ MAC Store, Ala Moana Mall (My all time favorite fluidline color is a beautiful shimmer deep bronze called, "Rich Ground"... and every makeup artist should have "Blacktrack" fluidline in her kit as well)

5) Batting Average: I'm sure we've all had our fair shares of 'striking out' when it comes to choosing a mascara. I can't believe how many options we have today, it's rather inundating if you ask me! I had fellow beauty gurus run to the Dior Counter when Dior Show first came out, some loved it, others... not so much. Maybe mascara is like perfume, it performs differently on each person. Well depending on what type of lashes you have, will decipher which mascara is best for you. And there you have it, the million dollar question, "What mascara is best for me?" With mascaras ranging from $5- $589 (yep, that's right, you heard correctly. There's a mascara named, "Socialite Mascara" that is embellished with swarovski crystals!! Go figure.) There is certainly a mascara that's just right for you! While some may refer to me as a Hawaii Socialite (okay, so it's just my BWB Girl friends, but still....!) I'm not about to spend a month's rent on a tube of mascara.... especially since I only have eyes for one.... Lash Out by Loreal. It grips every lash to fatten every last one of them, as well as lengthening. I have been faithful to Lash Out for the past 2 years. You could say, I have a great batting average... for the past two years.... I've hit everyone out of the park!

6) Eye on the Prize: "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, , whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think on such things... (look on such things)" Phil. 4:8 We've all heard, "You are what you eat." Spiritually speaking, this is more true than we realize. Look on things that will bring you joy, that will fill your heart with love, that will fill your dreams with hope, that will fill your soul with faith. Why would we feed ourselves anything other than what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable? If eyes are the window to your soul.... what is your soul saying? Beauty comes from within remember. We have to concentrate on inner beauty even more than the outer. You can learn all you can to play up your eyes the best you know how, but what are they saying? Be mindful of what you look at, on what you allow in your minds eye... after all, what you see triggers a thought; a thought becomes an action; an action becomes a habit; a habit becomes your character; your character leads you to your destiny. "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" 2 Corinthians 4:18
Try: Quiet time on the beach at sunset/ Priceless Focus on the beauty of creation. Look up. Take a deep breath. Forget all your worries. Let the sand run through your fingers. Dream a little Dream. Let the wind catch your hair. Count your blessings. Know you are Made Beautiful. Realize your Value. Smile. Thank God. And remember where your true help comes from.

Good Will Hunter

It's not every day you get to work with a person, whose face you grew up watching and wishing and hoping that one day you would be able to work with them. It was the late 80's early 90's when Marie Claire and Vogue would babysit me for hours... exactly when 'supermodels ruled the world'... before celebrities did. Fast forward to the summer of 2008. It was 4:30 am when I pulled up to the Pink Hotel (aka The Royal Hawaiian), luggage in tow, two big pieces actually... but it wasn't for a vacation. Today, I was working with Miss Rachel Hunter, and I was prepared! Along with the luggage filled with beauty products (including a new splurge; a cooling creme blush stick by Chantecaille which I just love!) I had my director's chair and a cooler filled with beverages; an energetic berry juice for the morning, and some energy drinks for mid-day. I wanted to cover all my bases, afterall, this wasn't your average model... this was supermodel status, and I knew that Rachel has had every makeup artist in the biz work on her.

Two fun-filled, 14 hour days of shooting with Miss Hunter went by; 12 hair changes, 24 makeup touch ups, 20 wardrobe changes, 16 locations, 85 miles (North Shore and back), 3,000 pictures, 2 bottles of Banana Boat SPF 30, 6 energy drinks, 140 onlookers, 1 fruit basket (delivered to Rachel by one of the guys sitting on the porch of their beach front home at Sunset Beach), 3 Retro wooden surf boards, 1 Photographer hiding in the bushes (He was shooting for Hawaii Film and Television Magazine.... it went to print with a picture of me touching up Hunter!) 5 Kiwis (Production crew), 1 Supermodel and 1 Orange County Girl (Makeup Artist!)

It was a weekend to remember; and a major perk to the job.... you get the pictures to prove it!

ART MAJOR

As an Artist... I wear many hats. Makeup/Hair/Styling/Production/Graphics/Designer/Model/Actress/Choreographer/Writer/Director/Editor.

I love it all! That's the beauty of being a freelance artist.... you don't have to choose just one. As my mother often told me as a young girl, "Why have one, when you can have them all." Go after ALL your dreams. Growing up with that kind of encouragement instilled in me the visionary attributes that I possess today. I was once told to write down "50 Wonderful Things" by a college professor at FIDM (Where I majored in Visual Communications....ART) at first mention, I thought 50 was a bit frivolous; today, I have 200 "Wonderful Things" I want to do in life. I've checked off more than 50 already. Who are we NOT to live the life of our DREAMS.

At times, I admit... wearing multiple hats can be quite inundating even to the strongest of women; but let's face it girls, it's just more fun... and we do it oh so well.....

I had a blast working on this shoot.... Hugette, Editor of DISfunkshion Magazine, is all about COLOR. So I gave her color! It was like being in ART class all over again. I used traditional makeup and pigment, along with my airbrush gun. I splattered, sprayed, and spackled. It was one of the most creative, unrestrained art projects I've ever been apart of. It's definitely safe to say, "I love my job!"

Fun people are a perk to any job. As a makeup artist, there's a vast contrast in a days work when you have a client who is "nice" and someone who is "entertaining" and just all around "fun"! You may be spending anywhere from 1 hour to upwards of 12 hours with your client, face to face.... invading their personal space from the get-go, so let me tell you.... I appreciate fun clients. I mean, someone who can make you laugh, someone who can take a joke, who can be professional, yet silly if the moment calls for that sort of behavior... someone who likes to chat in between shooting and delve into amusing stories during lunch.... it makes a long day just zip by! And that's exactly what happened when I worked with Naveen Andrews from LOST. We shot for the cover of Parade Magazine one warm, sunny afternoon at the Kahala Resort, and he was such a joy to work with. I mean, we were laughing! And by the end of the shoot, we were

having our own lil photo shoot!

Just an FYI, to all you makeup artists working in Hawaii... don't wear a skirt to a shoot on the beach in the late afternoon... otherwise you end up taking a perfectly cute picture with a celebrity with your skirt tied in a knot looking more like a fashion-don't than a lucky girl getting her picture taken with a perfectly cute celebrity. :-)

A case of History repeating itself.... as it always does. Trends come and go, fashion cycles never stand still... being a product of the 80's, I would have been happy if the neon Blues-Brothers looking glasses never made it's way back into our lives.... but alas they did! I actually have a pair of neon pinks in my closet, thanks to a give away bag at Fashion event I attended.... but that's getting off the topic. After my last blog, I had the song, "10 lil Indian Boys and Girls" in my head, all day. So, what do ya know! Today I found yet another endearing little Indian Girl amid my collection of beauties in my portfolio. This was circa 2002, when I lived in good ol' Orange County, California. I thought I'd post this one too in honor of my apparent Indian fixation.

"Queue Rainbow!"

Indian Summer Editorial/Damsel Magazine

Not everyday is a walk in the park, just because I live and work in Hawaii.... okay, maybe it is!

So here we have a shoot, that just went.... well, right. First of all, what a great team! I'm not only surrounded by talented, kind-hearted artists, they just happened to be great friends of mine too.

We start with our beloved model: Michelle Vaywer whom I just love! Born and raised right here in Kailua, Oahu, she's now traveling the world, modeling. She was also a wonderful guest speaker at the premier event for my new Foundation, Pure Beauty Ministries, that I just launched this past April.

Next up, we have a very close friend of mine, Miss Crystal Pancipanci... what a name!

She was the hairstylist for this shoot, and did an amazing job with our lil Tiger Lily!

I of course, did the makeup; sticking with a bronze, terra cotta color palette that

would make Pocahontas proud. (Okay, I've officially run out of female Indian names!)

And the eye that captured it all, goes by the name of Daeja Fallas, whose an incredible photographer and again, a dear friend of mine.

And this is when it starts getting truly magnificent. As if on queue, a double rainbow appears directly over the multi-colored Diane Von Ferstenberg dream of a dress, and makes every one of us atop that Pacific Heights mountain-top, sigh .....

It reminds me:

"Do not despise the rain, for it brings forth the most glorious wonders"

Can't get the rainbow without the rain!

It was calling my name :-)

Modern Luxury Hawaii Magazine

It was a great honor to be featured in one of Hawaii's finest magazines; Modern Luxury Hawaii. When I was contacted by the Editor to be apart of the upcoming issue, I was so excited, I had always wanted to do makeup for this magazine. Little did I know, it wasn't behind the scenes work I would be doing, but rather, this would be my first interview and full page story for my work as a Hair and Makeup Artist.

Music and dancing were an inevitable part of the shoot as photographer, Linny Morris

worked her magic behind the camera lens; I was having the time of my life. How wonderful to have the opportunity to share your passion with the world... and at the same time, get all dolled up for a photo shoot. Two of my favorite things!

I remember being 9 years old, waiting for my Mom to finish her grocery shopping, while Elle and Marie Claire babysat me for hours in the magazine aisle :-) The words, "I can do that!" ran through my head as I sat completely enthralled by the world of Fashion and Beauty. I studied those magazines and the faces who graced the cover and became fully convinced that I would have no problem one day doing makeup on these women... afterall, it looked so easy! Well, isn't that cute, a little 9 year old without a doubt in the world.

Those memories, I often visit... and it always brings a smile to my face, and to my heart. I did it. I lived out my childhood dream! I'm a makeup artist!! I have yet to do the cover of Elle and Marie Claire, (although my work has been featured in Marie Claire!) but I've done dozens upon dozens of covers; international, national, and local.

It's been a long while since those freeze-your-butt-off-from-sitting-on-the-cold-Stater Brother-Floor-while-reading-Elle Days.... but I am still transfixed by the art of creating beauty. And I am so thankful, that God placed that dream in this young girls heart, and then gave her the courage to go and live it.
