If you're a makeup artist or just always dreamed of being one, chances are you have one (or ALL!) of his genius makeup books... but do you have his beauty products? If the answer is no, you should take a field trip to your local Sephora or select department stores and change that. Seriously, I'm loving the Celestial Bronzing Veil in Tropical Days and Nights, The Creamy Glow in Pravella (but all colors are worth getting!) and of course the Sensual Concealer... yes, even foundation can be sexy!

Makeup 101

Did you go to school for Makeup?

I didn't attend school for my profession. Working, attending workshops, reading books and studying magazines became my school. I learned my craft as I went and I was always making sure I was around people who inspired me and people I could learn from. I went to FIDM, Fashion College where I studied Visual Communications. I learned the theories of color and design, which helped me as an artist. I also learned how to market a creative business, plan events, wardrobe style and various other skills that helped me along my way as a freelance makeup artist and business owner. I put myself through college while working as a Hair & Makeup Artist. I continue to soak up all the knowledge I can, I continue to push my self, my creativity and my courage. I recommend if you're a Makeup Artist to make sure you're attending Trade shows! Here are a few NOT to miss...

IMATS. www.imats.net International Makeup Artist Trade Show. I was totally inspired by my time at the trade show in Pasadena and ran into some ol' favorites including Dany Sanz of Makeup Forever, Sharon Gault aka Mama Makeup, and met some new inspirational artists including the incredible, Rae Morris and the Creator of IMATS and The Makeup Artist Magazine himself, Michael Key.

The Makeup Show: www.TheMakeupShow.com which starts TODAY (May 15 &16th) in NYC! I so wish I can be there for this spectacular display of talent!! Some of the gurus I'd love to see if I were in the Big Apple this weekend would be... Billy B (whom I had the pleasure of running into while at the MAC store at The Grove in LA!), Charlie Green, Patti Dubroff, Reggie Wells, Sam Fine and other stars!

Ruby's Ruby Lips

One of the models I worked on at the D & G / Naomi Campbell Party for NY's Fashion's Night Out was this lovely lady: Ruby. We had a blast working before the show and I think these ruby lips suited her just fine. 

Ahh.... there's no place like NYC. 

Modern Luxury Hawaii Magazine

It was a great honor to be featured in one of Hawaii's finest magazines; Modern Luxury Hawaii. When I was contacted by the Editor to be apart of the upcoming issue, I was so excited, I had always wanted to do makeup for this magazine. Little did I know, it wasn't behind the scenes work I would be doing, but rather, this would be my first interview and full page story for my work as a Hair and Makeup Artist. 

Music and dancing were an inevitable part of the shoot as photographer, Linny Morris 

worked her magic behind the camera lens; I was having the time of my life. How wonderful to have the opportunity to share your passion with the world... and at the same time, get all dolled up for a photo shoot. Two of my favorite things!   

I remember being 9 years old, waiting for my Mom to finish her grocery shopping, while Elle and Marie Claire babysat me for hours in the magazine aisle :-) The words, "I can do that!" ran through my head as I sat completely enthralled by the world of Fashion and Beauty. I studied those magazines and the faces who graced the cover and became fully convinced that I would have no problem one day doing makeup on these women... afterall, it looked so easy! Well, isn't that cute, a little 9 year old without a doubt in the world. 

Those memories, I often visit... and it always brings a smile to my face, and to my heart. I did it. I lived out my childhood dream! I'm a makeup artist!! I have yet to do the cover of Elle and Marie Claire, (although my work has been featured in Marie Claire!) but I've done dozens upon dozens of covers; international, national, and local. 

It's been a long while since those freeze-your-butt-off-from-sitting-on-the-cold-Stater Brother-Floor-while-reading-Elle Days.... but I am still transfixed by the art of creating beauty. And I am so thankful, that God placed that dream in this young girls heart, and then gave her the courage to go and live it.
